DAY SIX: Tour of rural South Carolina

OCT. 15, 2018  |  The team explored the rural South Carolina communities of Walterboro and Bamberg on the sixth day of filming and learned how people deal daily with challenges involving race and politics.

In Walterboro, Bruce Hawker spoke with Anthony Rhone.  He explained how his small nonprofit, the Village Investment Project, has worked for the last year to get a portable pool in Colleton County so that kids can learn to swim.  The county has no public pools.  Rhone also expounded on the roles of white and black voters in local, state and national politics.

After traveling along a rural road lined with cotton and other fields, Hawker met Trent Kinard, an educator and former state trooper who serves on Bamberg County Council. As the South Carolina heat sweltered, Kinard explained challenges of poor, rural communities and promoted a hometown girl made good — U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.
